How we handle your data

  • Who reads it: the START A BIT teachers. For a registration (a student or a new teacher), we send the registration data to the Swedish study association (studieförbund) that supports our study group, which has its own data policy. Nobody else gets it.
  • Why: to answer you, to plan the lessons with the student, and to follow how our students learn over the years. Only inside START A BIT.
  • Where: encrypted, in a database in the EU at Cloudflare, which also runs this website. We get an email when a message comes. Registration data is never in that email.
  • Students' work: what a student sends in Work and messages (words, code, pictures of their work) is seen only by that student and the teachers. A picture is checked on the student's own device first: faces are covered with a sticker, and hidden data, such as the place it was taken, is left out. Our server checks it again. Pictures are kept in the EU at Cloudflare until the student or a teacher deletes them, or the student's account is removed. A deleted picture is gone at once: we keep no copies and no backups of pictures.
  • AI in lessons: the teacher decides how each student uses AI (see our approach). The Code lab's AI, when the teacher opens it, sends the student's code, its error messages and the student's own description to Cloudflare Workers AI, to explain an error, ask questions, suggest code or draft a program. It never sends a name, and Cloudflare keeps nothing. What a student asks it, and its answers, are kept 30 days for the teacher and the student. The Code lab's AI camera works on the student's own device: its pictures go nowhere. Registration data never goes to an AI service.
  • How long: as long as we need it for our study group. We check once a year what we can delete, and we delete your data at once when you ask.
  • Your rights: you can ask to see, correct or delete your data. Send us a message on the Contact page, or answer one of our emails. You can also complain to IMY, Sweden’s data protection authority.
  • Videos: our pages show a picture of each video. Only when you press Play does the video load from YouTube (Google), in its privacy-enhanced mode; from then on, YouTube's own privacy rules apply.
  • Spam check and cookies: Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person, not a robot, sends the form. It looks at the browser and may set a security cookie, never for advertising. We have no visitor statistics. Students who sign in get a sign-in cookie.
